The UTU-MTA Trust Fund Office is providing the following information to assist in ensuring that clear and accurate information is available to participants of the UTU-MTA Trust Fund sponsored benefit plans.

Contracting the Coronavirus (COVID-19) may lead respiratory illness so it is important to understand what the symptoms are, how can the virus be spread and what can each of us do to lower the chance of contracting the virus.

Symptoms

The reported symptoms of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) are most part identical to those of the flu: fever, cough and shortness of breath.

Understanding how the virus spreads:
The virus is known to spread when infected people cough or sneeze. The cough or sneeze results in the release of tiny droplets which can carry the virus, People who are within 6 feet of an infected person’s cough or sneeze may then become infected by tiny droplets. Infection becomes more likely when a person exposed to infected droplets touches their own face, mouth, eyes or nose.

Infection may also spread when a person touches an object or surface that the virus and them touches their own face, mouth, eyes or nose.

Steps To Take To Reduce The Chance Of Infection

For those individuals whose immune system is already challenged such as older individuals or those already diagnosed with respiratory illness, it is important to be diligent in taking steps to protect themselves from potential exposure.

  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • Regular washing of hands with soap and water of a minimum of 20 seconds.
  • Use of hand sanitizer with a minimus of 60% alcohol is effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Cough or sneeze into a tissue or you elbow and then wash your hand afterwards.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that are frequently touched.
